What Is Yaupon?

Yaupon is a tree that grows native in the southeastern United States. The native tribes of the area made a stimulating tea from the Yaupon leaves as it was revered as traditional medicine. Yaupon is the only caffeine source native to North America. Yaupon contains anti-oxidants comparable to blueberries, has chlorogenic acid, polyphenols and flavonoids. Yaupon also contains theobromine, the alkaloid found in dark chocolate. Yaupon’s taste ranges from a smooth black tea to a light green tea. It can also have bitter notes depending on the time of year and roasting process.

The Beloved Tree

For thousands of years, among the native people, Yaupon was the most sacred plant in North America. It was called “The Beloved Tree”, ASI, “The Purifier” and Cassina.

The early settlers fell in love with Yaupon too:

  • The English called Yaupon “Carolina Tea” & “South Seas Tea”.

  • The French called Yaupon Tea “Apalachine” after the Apalachicola Indians who introduced them to Yaupon Holly.

  • The Spanish in Florida first witnessed the Timicuan tribes using Yaupon and soon called Yaupon “Chocolate del Indio” or “Indian chocolate'“ because it was much smoother than Yerba Mate.
